Suto Orizari, the kingdom of the Roma.

In the heart of the Balkans, we can find the only municipality in the world that is in majority constituted of roma people.
The scenery of various movies, such as the “Time of the Gypsies” by film director Emir Kusturica, Suto Orizari - nicknamed Sutka by its inhabitants - counts with an estimated population of 40,000 people, its own mayor and TV channel, various schools and romani as its official language.
With the celebrations of 8th, April, the International Day for the Roma People, Sutka brings the perspective of a living laboratory for the dreams of this community: made of some 12 million people, it is the biggest ethnical minority in the European Union.
The village was chosen to rehouse the poor families, mainly gypsies, who had lost their houses in 1963 after the earthquake of Skopje.
In 1996, after only 3 months of preparation and despite the prejudices that established that Roma people were unlikely capable of organising themselves, the first mayor, Nezdet Mustafa, was elected.
Here started the story of Suto Orizari, a ghetto transformed in the first romani local government in the world.

En el corazón de los Balcanes se encuentra la única municipalidad del mundo mayoritariamente romaní.
Escenario de varias películas, como “El tiempo de los Gitanos” del director de cine Emir Kusturica, Suto Orizari - Sutka, como la llaman cariñosamente sus habitantes - cuenta con una población estimada de 40,000 personas, un alcalde propio, varias escuelas, una cadena de TV y el romaní como lengua oficial.
Con las celebraciones del 8 de abril, Día Internacional del Pueblo Rom, Sutka ofrece la visión de un laboratorio vivo para las aspiraciones de esa comunidad: compuesta por unos 12 millones de personas, es la mayor minoría étnica de la Unión Europea.
El poblado fue designado para realojar a las familias pobres, principalmente gitanas, que habían perdido sus casas en el terremoto de 1963 de Skopie.
En 1996, tras solo tres meses de preparativos y pese a los prejuicios que establecían que los romá eran incapaces de organizarse, fue elegido el primer alcalde gitano, Nezdet Mustafa.
Ahí comenzó la historia de Suto Orizari, un gueto transformado en el primer municipio rom del mundo.
